Wang Chen Yun went through classical training as a painter and studied the complex techinques of oil painting, which he also aready passed on to other young painters as a college teacher.

Yet, it was just this training and the virtuosity attained through it as well as the basis in traditional ideas of painting which threw Chen Yun Wang into a situation of great confusion after his move to Germany at the beginning of the 90ies.

Confronted with ideas of painting, which questioned figurative representation in general or decidedly took its deconstruction or ironic commentary as their subject matter, his ideas of painting were put to trial.

It was only after a period of radical intellectual and painterly reorientation, which the artist had to pass through, that he was able to seize and make use of the freedom-potential, which the diversity of valid conceptions and artistic approaches in today's Post-modern consciousness offers and legitimatizes.

The development of his former almost rigidly-monumentalising pictures into an open, outward-looking and fluid painting characterises his painterly conception. At the same time, his painting is marked by the discipline and surpreme excellence of his acquired proficiency in painting technique.

While opening itself to a contemporary visual languagge and Western traditions of painting, his painting manages to recover its own cultural identity. to preserve it and to give it a new relevance. This constitutes the strength of Chen Yun Wang's work.
